Being a Night Owl

Night Owl

It’s not fun being a Night Owl (I think the term was coined by my dad) – I’ve gotten into the habit of staying up at night, and waking up late.

However, now I HAVE to wake up early to get things done right due to being on LooP, and it’s so hard. I wake up tired and slug through the day, and the darker it gets at night the more I’m awake.

It’s not fun, but it’s an embedded habit, and I’m trying HARD to break it. I’d LOVE it if you could offer any tips.

  1. Quite simply, go to bed. Do not listen to your internal clock that tells you that being awake is what you should do. After years of training the internal clock to be a night owl, you simply have to train it back. After finishing my M.A., it's taken me 6-8 months to get into the habit of getting up before 9am every morning and going to bed at or before midnight every night. Just ask my wife – by 10pm I don't have a whole lot of intellectual capacity anymore. I need my sleep.

For more on the impotance of discipline, read the book of Proverbs. Discipline and self-control are marks of the Christian, and are necessary to make the transition from being a night owl to a regular daylight person.

Thanks for the comment Peter. Discipline is definitely one of my prime weaknesses, and proverbs has definitely helped in the past.
